Stepping on the scale day after day, week after week only to see no progress is very frustrating. You eat well, and you exercise regularly. And yet … the scale isn’t moving. The question is: why not? The truth is, there’s more to weight loss than calories in, calories out. Here are four other things that could be hindering your weight loss.
- Hormonal changes. At different points in our lives, our hormones fluctuate. During these times, it can be much, much harder to lose weight. If you think this could be what’s affecting the number on your scale, talk to your doctor.
- Sleep deprivation. If you don’t get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, you’re wreaking havoc on your weight loss efforts. Your body doesn’t have enough time to recover when you don’t go to bed on time, which means you’re not fully benefiting from all those good choices you’re making throughout the day.
- Stress. Here’s the truth: If your stress levels are high, it is nearly impossible to lose weight. Along with hormonal changes (because let’s be honest, stress is a hormonal response), stress levels can change over time. The higher the stress, the higher the number on the scale.
- Hidden calories. Sometimes even when you think you’re eating well, you’re not. There are calories hidden in even the most innocent foods. To see if this is what’s slowing your weight loss down, track everything you put in your mouth for a few days. (And by everything, I mean every. Single. Thing.) Download an app that can help you keep track of things and will also calculate the nutrients in each food. That way, you’ll have a pretty good idea about whether you’re consuming more sugar, sodium or overall calories than you thought.
