Choosing Teacher Training

Choosing the right teacher training for you can be challenging. You might feel overwhelmed sifting through reviews.

While you’re considering teacher training, ask yourself some of the following questions.

“What type of practice resonates with me?”

“Is this what I’d like to strengthen and share with future students?”

Knowing Yourself: Sharing Meditation

Meditation. This is something I know I’d like to strengthen and share with others. It’s tough to train your mind to sit still. I know I’ve always looked up to those who seem to have perfected the art of the craft.

If you’ve ever felt the same way, please continue reading!

Flourish Meditation Teacher Training

I came in contact with Flourish Meditation just a few short months ago while researching their brand and events. They offer a 200-hour Meditation Teacher Training. Spanning over the course of three months, the Flourish Meditation Teacher Training includes foundational knowledge about meditation as well as self-development, creative writing, speaking and storytelling, and business and marketing.

Kimberly Revereza and her Journey

Kimberly has worked in development in different forms for two decades. She started in the entertainment industry before creating a self-development workshop program, and then became a meditation teacher/studio owner. “Our teacher training program is really a combination of the best of what I have to offer from all of my experiences,” states Kimberly.

About the Flourish Meditation Teacher Training

The training program also includes a discussion on honor and appropriation during which students learn together how to become better ambassadors of the practice. This course is for people who are interested in teaching meditation, for yoga teachers who are wanting to add this specialty to their offerings, and for students of meditation who want a deeper connection to their practice and to themselves.

Flourish’s next session kicks off in the Fall of 2022. The community will be studying together on Zoom and students who are unable attend all the sessions live will have access to the playbacks. Flourish offers two partial scholarships for BIPOC students. Learn more at Flourish Meditation.

Can our smoothies really help relieve stress? Yes!

There is a reason why all of the pumpkin spice blends are so popular in the fall. Spices like cinnamon and nutmeg are warming and help stimulate digestion in the fall and winter. This smoothie recipe provides a comforting warmth from these spices and can offer some support for stress relief with the addition of powerhouse adaptogenic herbs.

Adaptogens are herbs and foods that have a positive effect on many of the systems in our body. They help serve to balance hormones. Adaptogens also help us cope with stress and anxiety and combat fatigue.

One of my favorite adaptogens is ashwagandha, which I use in this recipe. Ashwagandha is an earthy flavor that blends really well into smoothies. When I use it, I definitely feel more calm throughout the day. Another great adaptogen is maca, which also offers a malt flavor for smoothies in the fall—or any time of year.

Ingredients for Building a Spicy Smoothie for Stress Relief

  • 2 tsp ground flaxseed. Flaxseed is an excellent source of protein, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • 1 tsp Ashwagandha. This adaptogen helps our nervous systems handle the stressful world.
  • 1 tsp Maca. Maca is an ancient South American superfood that is useful for balancing hormonal health and increase energy and stamina.
  • 1 tsp Functional mushroom blend. Mushrooms help improve cognitive function, boost energy levels, and strengthens our stamina.
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon. This popular spice is both warming and grounding. It proves a bit of sweetness for flavor. Research shows this even helps regulate blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance. I love how cinnamon contributes to the feel of the holidays and is uplifting any time of year.
  • Pinch of Nutmeg. You only need a pinch, because this warming spice can be a little intense. Grounding nutmeg also helps stimulate digestion.
  • 2 organic medjool dates. Dates are high in fiber, disease-fighting antioxidants, low glycemic index. (Remember to remove the seeds!) These make a satisfying smoothie sweetener.
  • 1 cup of plant-based milk (I used Macadamia). Macadamia nut milk is low in carbs and high in healthy fats.
  • Almond butter. I love almond butter in smoothies because it is a great source of protein and healthy fats.
  • Handful of ice (if desired). You can also use frozen fruit. Frozen bananas make a great base as well.
  • Vanilla. I put a splash of vanilla in my smoothies to add a little more flavor.
  • Protein powder if desired.

Blend well! And enjoy!

Experiment with spices in your smoothies in every season and sip on wellness.

One Love Fest Transformational Festival

Join One Love Fest for Music & More in May, 2021

Connection. It’s a basic human need that offers us feelings of being understood, seen, and loved. It’s a bond that helps us relate to one another and is one of the most rewarding elements in life. I believe that transformational festivals like One Love Fest create a pathway for this powerful exchange.

When can we actually attend a festival again? The time is now! Although many of the capstone events of the transformational festival community are not hosting live events in 2021, there is one conscious gathering that will be inviting attendees this Memorial Day weekend.

One Love Fest Invites Attendees to Arizona

One Love Fest will take place May 28-31, 2021. This year’s location is just an hour south of Las Vegas in Dolan Springs, Arizona. It will be the highly anticipated event we’ve all been waiting for — yoga, music, art, and you guessed it: powerful human connection.

The festival will abide by current COVID-19 guidelines. Every concert attendee is required to wear a mask at entry. It’s also advised that everyone keep a mask on them at all times, and to respect personal space and boundaries. If someone requests that you wear a mask, then you put on your mask! (Do note that Arizona is a mask-free state.) Although it certainly is a different approach to connecting with others, it’s also an opportunity to be transparent and communicative with our needs. And that right there, is authenticity, compassion and love at its very core.

One Love Fest Stage

Meaning and Connection found at Transformation Festivals

One of the most meaningful experiences I have had at a transformational festival is when I was teaching yoga with my camp at Burning Man. As we were in downward facing dog, an intense dust storm came through, practically knocking us all over! Although I was concerned with how it might affect things, I was pleasantly surprised to find everyone laughing and helping each other up. There was absolutely zero judgment amongst complete strangers. It was in that moment when I realized that there was so much love, acceptance and… connection. What I personally miss, as I’m sure many others do, is this type of magic that can only be felt at a transformational gathering. I crave those moments of unity in intimate settings, spirituality, movement, and freedom in a community of other like-minded individuals.

The Power of Love

“Love is the most powerful thought in the universe,” says One Love’s founder, Kenneth Schwenker. It’s refreshing to hear such a relatable statement from someone who truly understands the need for strengthening community, especially after such a difficult year.
Kenneth, who has a long and storied career in the transformational space, has always held a special place in his heart for immersive experiences where there is a shared love for connection, music, movement, and creativity. Where you can safely arrive “home,” peel back the superficial layers, and ultimately reveal to one another that we are all beautifully the same on the inside.

One Love Fest Sign

Good Vibrations!

As a festival go-er and yoga teacher myself, I’ve always appreciated the vibrations that arise from these types of festivals. These events offer numerous moments for us to explore, self heal, learn, and fully embrace our expressive freedom. Festivals allow us to do all this and feel safe and confident in a place of non-judgement and compassion.

Attend One Love Fest

One Love Fest will feature a full complement of music with genres ranging from house to kirtan. There will be multiple stages featuring well-known artists such as as Mikey Lion from Desert Hearts, Paul Oakenfield, and Desert Dwellers. The festival will have us all excited and dancing free under the moonlight! There will be various yoga classes, food venders, workshops, and camping on-site.

Yoga and Spinning joins the vibrant Downtown Los Angeles culture.

Downtown LA is known for its multifaceted environment where creative expression and culture thrive. Whole Foods moving in represents one of the latest entries in the health and fitness components of the neighborhood’s revitalization. Part of the hood for over five years now, YAS, (Yoga and Spinning) has experienced a major renovation, offering a fresh landmark in the downtown wellness scene. Founded by fitness leader, Kimberly Fowler, the classes at YAS are designed to fit every lifestyle and are suitable for students of all levels.

According to Kimberly Fowler and YAS VP Sherri Rosen, “YAS DTLA is a culmination of all that YAS is and all it strives to become. The openness of the overall design, sleek style of Spinning bikes, the earthiness of the yoga room juxtaposed against the street vibe of the custom wall mural that adorns the spin room expresses every facet of YAS. We’re raw, gritty, strong and open, warm, welcoming, and accessible to everyone.”

When I entered the studio, I immediately felt part of the family by the attentive staff and welcoming students. Master teacher Kristie LaTray is frequently voted one of LA’s top trainers and taught my signature YAS class: 30 minutes of spinning followed by 30 minutes of yoga with vibrant energy. Other classes at the studio include Yoga for Athletes, Power 30, and  Indoor Cycling.

Fowler and Rosen say of their downtown LA outpost, “You can find YAS opening in areas in which art and freedom of expression is celebrated. We go into areas that are up and coming so we can be a part of the fabric of the community once it evolves.”

Have you ever wondered what sweating really does to our bodies? Other than creating the need to shower, perspiration regulates our bodies in multiple ways: helping us to release toxins, improve the glow of our skin, assist in weight loss, encourage destressing, and relaxing our minds. When you look at it that way, sweating is cool. Sophie Chiche, owner of Shape House LA in Larchmont Village, Pasadena, and now Santa Monica, is the first to agree.

The Santa Monica location of Shape House LA is a welcoming cottage that houses a vibrantly colored day spa featuring the art of sweating through a deeply detoxifying infrared sauna experience. Upon arrival, you will instantly feel relaxed by the spa’s overall ambiance. The friendly staff greets you and then sets you up with comfortable clothing and alkaline water. Once inside the room, you are escorted to a personal sleeping bag bed, equipped with a personal TV. The sweat lasts an hour: for the first 30 minutes, it feels simply like a warm bed; during the second half hour, you’ll feel your heart rate pick up. When it is over, you’ll be soaked and refreshed. Linger in the meditation room with a cup of tea and relax.

June2014Jake1eThe thing that got me hooked in yoga was when the impossible became possible.” –Jake Ferree

We each make our journey to yoga in our own way, and Jake Ferree’s may be one that is familiar to many of us. Brought to his first yoga class during a time in his life when he was facing personal challenges, the stillness of savasana delivered an a-ha moment: Jake noticed the negative, self-critical nature of his thoughts.

“I realized that I was speaking to myself in a way that I would never speak to anyone else. Then this simple thought came to me, ‘What would happen if you treated yourself as a friend?’ That thought completely changed my life and has been the biggest gift of the practice.”

When you first walk into Jake’s class, you can’t help but notice his muscular build, yet his love of fitness is more than just about building muscle—it includes the incorporation of spirituality and yoga. He has integrated multiple modalities, through his continuing involvement in weight lifting, along with personal training, yoga, breathwork, and Reconnective Healing, a program developed by chiropractor Dr. Eric Pearl.

Reflective of his own experience, Jake’s priority when teaching is to communicate that in order to gain a deeply-rooted connection to both body and practice, you must work from the inside out. “Because of yoga, I’ve experienced moments in my life where I am able to see things more clearly and handle situations in ways I wouldn’t normally have handled them.” He feels this comes from the basics of yoga practice, “Once you establish the connection to your breath, your perspective shifts, and you are able to see things more clearly.” Jake believes the most important benefit of yoga is the awareness that develops as a result of the practice—in all areas of life. Even when someone is introduced to the physical aspects of the practice, the spiritual has a way of “sneaking its way into a person’s life,” as Jake describes the phenomenon.

Jake gives an example of this in his own life, “I recently went snowboarding in Colorado and found myself able to connect with the breath as I was boarding. Once I did that, the whole experience was enhanced. I was able to take in everything that was happening all around me and fully appreciate the moment. I felt my movement connecting to my breath. It was is if I were on my mat flowing and connecting through a vinyasa sequence. Moments like that just sort of happen and I am able to notice them more and more.”

The power of those moments wasn’t necessarily something Jake could have anticipated while growing up in Reno, Nevada. But his love of fitness did begin when he was young and the weight room was a place to let go of negative emotions. “The gym was an escape for me,” confessed Jake.

While in his early 20s, Jake’s commitment to fitness led him to becoming a nationally certified personal trainer. He then owned and operated Elite Training, a personal training service that worked out of multiple gyms in northern Nevada.

Ready for a change, he moved to Los Angeles at the age of 25 and began working as a personal trainer at Equinox. Not long after, Jake made the decision to cross-train in yoga simply to try something new. “Let me tell you, the first time I took a yoga class it kicked my butt,” Jake said, “I was used to lifting weights, but I never actually spent time stretching my muscles.”

Although Jake struggled to find a balance between strength and flexibility in his practice, he did not give up. In addition to his usual resistance training routine, he committed to yoga by going to class twice a week for a month. Not only did he become more flexible in his physical body, he also noted positive changes in the way he viewed life in general. Needless to say, Jake continued going to class even after his month-long commitment was over.

June2014Jake3“In yoga, I had to confront my issues rather than escape from them.” There’s a payoff that Jake found in this process, “The beauty is that you learn how to deal with hardships and it helped me appreciate and learn to love myself.” His growing appreciation for yoga led to attending teacher training; he completed the YogaWorks program in 2007 while living for a stint in New York City. His love for LA pulled him back to the West Coast, and his return came with a commitment to teach.

Jake’s strong fitness background initially influenced the way he taught. With time and further practice, Jake transitioned from a strictly physical method of teaching to one that incorporates both mind and body. For him, it is very important to get people to notice what is happening on a deeper level versus what is happening within the physical pose. “The poses are wonderful and needed,” states Jake, “But what else is happening beyond that? That’s the essence I want to hit in my classes.” While Jake has taught at a number of locations throughout LA, he currently teaches at Aura Yoga on Sunset in West Hollywood, where he helps run the yoga department.

Jake assisted in the development of the color scheme for the studio’s specialized lighting system, one of the hallmarks of Aura Yoga. The lighting was implemented to create themed ambiance during practice connecting to themes and ideas such as the chakra system or the elements of nature. Linking specific themes to colors complements classes taught by Jake and other teachers at the studio allowing students to connect with their senses and surroundings, facilitating the work from the inside out. For example, filling the studio with blue light emphasizes the water elements flowing through life or the fluidity through practice.

We have all been hard on ourselves at some point in our lifetime. When the idea of who we think we should be outweighs who we really are, we form unrealistic expectations which can cause suffering. Jake’s emphasis on the practice of treating oneself as a friend, for example, is one way we can appreciate that we are capable of anything and that fitness is not only what we can lift physically, but how we can uplift ourselves mentally or emotionally. Through yoga, Jake summarizes, “I am more aware of my movements, my actions, my words. I am more aware of what’s happening around me. I am able to see things more clearly.”
