She finds them to be powerful tools for practicing mindfulness. In an exclusive offer, Szilvia is giving away a yoga inspired necklace, to help focus your intentions FREE of charge.

We are living in crazy times, which has led to an understandable increase in depression and anxiety. “I am happy to be able to support you and our yoga community during these tough times,” stated Szilvia about her initiative of giving away jewelry for depression and anxiety.  Choose your favorite design at from the special selection at: https://goghjewelrydesign.com/collections/welcome-to-the-tribe, add it to your cart and just pay the shipping ($7.99). No strings attached.

Gogh Jewelry Design is unique line of stunning jewelry made from nature’s most basic elements. Szilvia’s mission is to both give back and to celebrate life. Handcrafted jewelry inspires two types of value. There’s the monetary value expensive diamonds and gems provide. The second type of value is sentimental. A piece of jewelry that has meaning and purpose can offer more value than opulence. For jewelry designer Szilvia Gogh, pieces can be beautiful and say something too. This is the philosophy you’ll find within the collections of Gogh Jewelry Design.

Timeless Trends and Tips for Yoga Fashion

When it comes to yoga practice these days, you could say that “you are what you wear.” Finding supportive clothing can help you more easily schedule a yoga practice or workout into your daily routine. With more leggings available than can fit in your closet, how can you stay on trend? And how can you find just the right clothing options for your personal yoga fashion that won’t sit in a drawer, but will actually accompany you on the mat?

Questions to ask yourself in the fitting room

Purchasing yoga clothing can sometimes feel complicated—and expensive! Here is a place to begin. Rather than shopping on impulse, create a plan of action. Do you want your yoga clothing or workout wear to double as day-to-day clothing? Are you looking for high performance wear to practice in? Do you believe that leggings are the new jeans? Know yourself and know your style before you even begin shopping for greater success when you’re in the dressing room or shopping online. I tell people to look for pieces of clothing that you love so much you’d wear them on the street, even if you bought them for practice.

Finding the right cut…and the right fit

If you can, try before you buy. When you try it on, think cut and fit first. Different cuts are flattering on different body types and a garment whose cut just vibes with you will be one you come back to time after time. A good cut is one of those criteria that’s hard to define, but you know it when you look in the mirror. It’s the kind of thing that you will put on again and again.

Make a good fit your top priority. One of the trends in yoga pants is the comeback of the high waist. The rise and the waistband can really change the fit of the pant, so if you have a better fit with a wide waistband, the trends are in your favor. In fact, one of the reasons why wide waistbands are coming back is because yoga practitioners found they were fitting better.

How does it feel?

Fabric is an important part of the feel of the clothing. Ask yourself: Does it feel good on your skin? There are a wide range of fabric choices when it comes to athleisure and lifestyle clothing. People are looking for sustainable and fair trade options as well as eco-conscious and recycled materials, organic cotton, and bamboo blended into fabrics. You may even look for sun productive or UPF rated fabrics for outdoor activities. Whatever fabric you choose, make sure you’re happy with how it feels. After all, it’s literally hugging your skin, whether you’re sweating or restoring.

Lifestyle is more than a trend

You’ll be glad to know that one of the current trends is companies offering a wide range of sizes. Of course, we all hope this is more than just a trend. Body positivity is more than a hashtag. It is a path of compassion and we want to have clothes to support the practice.

Some of the current fashion trends in the studio and on the street support your search for a good cut, just the right fit, and fabrics that allow you to move with ease. Since yoga has become such an integral part of people’s lifestyles, more and more lines of clothing are made to easily transition from studio to the rest of your life.

Brands are expanding their offerings to include both performance and lifestyle. In addition, yoga has never been as sexy as it is now. Styles showcase diversity, from sizes (including plus size options) to designing for women of color, by everyone from emerging voices to established brands.

Leggings, Leggings, Everywhere

Beyond black, anything still goes from artist-drawn designs to metallic options. The popularity of shows like Pose are bringing the 80s gear back—with present-day cuts and fabrications.

Celeb and Collab Collections

Country music icon Carrie Underwood’s collection CALIA can be found at DICK’s Sporting Goods, actor Kate Hudson has famously shared Fablectics, and EleVen by Venus Willams’ collection includes but is not limited to tennis gear. Then there are collections within brands, such as Jennifer Lopez x Niyama Sol designed leggings, some of which include prints of her hand-written song lyrics pages, or yoga teacher Kathryn Budig’s collection with KiraGrace.

Find Your Personal Yoga Fashion

Whatever you wear, even if it is literally from the 80s, work it. Make it your own. Move in it. Celebrate yourself. The best trend is always being yourself.

Integrating Fitness into Daily Life

When it comes to integrating fitness activities outdoors, I hike at least once a week. But I also run to the beach (and jump in when it’s warm) two to three times a week! It’s serious therapy jumping into the ocean. Hiking and then the ocean is always a big win! My dog Aria is a partner in my wellness. Because Aria weighs 90 pounds and loves to run, she encourages me to get out every day. This has changed my life and opened my heart even more.

I move my body every day. Some days it’s yoga on the mat, other it is long hikes or runs to the beach. If I start to feel tight in my body, I know I’ve gone too long without movement.

Reiki, Energy Work, and Self-Care

Millana says, “I use my hands for self-healing multiple times each day. I find that healing flows from complete presence, so meditation helps me to connect to the infinite now. This is where I feel the healing from my hands (where ever I feel guided to put them) come through. Energy work is a major part of “the work” and doing the work is a daily practice. Our chakras and our aura can be easily affected by our daily life. So it is important for us to spend time daily to intentionally clear and reorganize our energy.”

She continues, “When it comes to getting started with using energy-based practices, I suggest that people sit in silence and practice self-inquiry. Ask yourself, “How can I start healing myself through energy work?” Listen to the answers, don’t disregard what comes up. You can start to sit in silence and lay hands on yourself. There are schools and teachers all over the world. Putting it into practice is really about getting into your own alignment with your inner guidance. Listening to your guidance will supply your answers.”

Meditation

Meditation helps Millana maintain focus. “Meditation is huge for me! I can’t imagine my life and work without a daily practice. The same goes with a consistent check-in with my spirit and source. I tap into bigger ideas, more kindness and clarity when I’m tapped in.” She says, “In order to support meditation anywhere, it’s really about clearing your space and making it sacred.”

Aside from the latest eco-friendly yoga mat, a popular accoutrement of the modern yogi is a strand of prayer beads called a mala. A mala is often worn draped around the neck or wrist.

While for some people a mala is just a trendy accessory, for others, a mala represents a link to the inner path. It is a tool to connect with the Divine and a reminder of this aspiration.

The History of Mala Beads

The use of malas dates back thousands of years to 8th century B.C. in India when ancient sandstone sculptures depicted people praying with beads to Lord Shiva. The word mala is short for the Sanskrit “japamala,” with “japa” meaning recitation and “mala” meaning garland.

A japamala basically helps the aspirant focus within and keep count of mantra recitation. Although this is the origin of malas, other paths including Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam also adopted similar practices.

Traditional malas (in Hinduism or Buddhism) consist of 108 beads or numerical derivations adding up to multiples of 9 (e.g. 27, 54). This number represents wholeness. The number 108 involves complex, mystical energies, as discovered by ancient Vedic sages who were expert mathematicians.

Too numerous to list all of them, here are a few of the fascinating facts that relate to 108. The sun’s diameter is 108 times the earth’s diameter. The 12 zodiac signs multiplied by the 9 planets equal 108. Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance of Lord Shiva has 108 poses. And the heart chakra contains 108 energy channels.

Working with a mala connects us with such mysterious powers.
In addition to its small beads, the mala contains a larger bead called the meru, bindu, or guru bead. This bead helps the practitioner feel where the strand begins and ends, thereby allowing him or her to keep the eyes closed and maintain focus.

This special bead also represents the connection between the student and “guru” (one who leads us from darkness to light).

How to Use a Mala

To use a mala, the practitioner dangles the strand between the middle and index fingers of the right hand. Starting at the guru bead, the practitioner uses the thumb to advance each bead over the middle finger towards the body, chanting aloud or silently. (The index finger is avoided since it represents the ego).

When an entire circuit of the mala has been traversed, the practitioner turns the mala around and resumes chanting in the other direction. Working with a mala calms distractions and deepens meditation, and even one round on the mala serves as a rewarding component of sadhana.

How Mala Beads Are Made

Malas may be made from a variety of different materials. One of the most common is rudraksha, which is a seed of a sacred Himalayan tree connected with Lord Shiva.

It is said that Lord Shiva (also called Rudra) emerged from deep meditation and cried a tear (aksha) for humanity, which became a seed that blossomed into a tree. To derive the utmost benefit, a rudraksha mala should be worn directly touching the skin where it protects the aura, dissolves negative karma, and conveys health benefits.

Followers of Lord Krishna use a mala made from the wood from the tulsi plant. Some Buddhists use a mala made from yak bones or seeds from the Bodhi tree.
Semi-precious stone malas imbue the practitioner with the properties of the stones themselves. Ultimately, the perfect mala finds each practitioner, guiding him or her along the path, offering a reservoir of peace.

A spiritual object that accumulates energy from the practitioner’s devotion, a mala should be treated respectfully whether worn or placed on an altar and handled only by the one using it.

Like a gentle tool for introspection, a mala helps deepen the calling to turn within, allowing the practitioner to be one with the breath, the chant, the practice.

Fitness Fashion Trend: High Neck Bra Tops

In terms of my full fitness workout, I do about an hour-and-a-half to two hours of arms, legs, and abs four to five days a week. For one specific workout, my favorite go-to are 15 squats.

They consist of doing 15 squats (I use a 15-25 pound weight, but it is still very effective without weights) and then I immediately do a 15 second wall squat for 15 repetitions.

Sometimes working out can get monotonous, and I find that usually when that happens, it’s due to a workout rut. As much as I love my gym and my go-to workouts, I like to break it up with “covert” exercise.

By taking a dance class, going dancing, or doing more yoga for the week instead, I kind of trick my mind into not realizing I’m still working out.

It’s also really fun to do things with friends like go ice skating, or play beach games because it can breathe new life into something that can become very serious and solitary if you let it.

Fitness Fashion Trend: Monochrome

Some of my main meditation practices include one where I use my Shakti mat and I put on some relaxing music and just sort of let everything melt away and focus on breathing.

Another main one is where I use a positive affirmation or guided meditation and focus on whatever the speaker is saying. I like to do the guided ones either right when I wake up or right before bed since it really sets your mind up to drive you towards a goal or affirmation.

Sierra Scott’s Yoga and Fitness Routine

I do bicycle crunches, which I love! Really works your abs – just make sure you have a mat or soft flooring because there weren’t enough mats at the gym one day so I opted to go without, and my coccyx was sore for about a week.

I love yoga, and I was always in dance and gymnastics growing up, so I like to try to keep that flexibility. If I’m not doing a full out yoga sequence or class, I stretch a lot during the day.

It’s really easy to fit in, like arm stretches when I’m in line at the grocery store or just a quick little sun salutation when I get out of bed. It doesn’t have to be long, could be a minute or less to just get the blood going.

Main Street in Santa Monica is one of those treasures of the greater Los Angeles area. It is so close to the beach that you can smell the salt air and jaunt down to the ocean. The boutiques and shops offer chances to take the bohemian Westside vibe home with you. One of the locations where the creative synergy connects fashion, beauty, and home decor is Blossom Atelier. Founded by hair and makeup artist as well as vintage fashion collector and designer Jamie Leonard along with Gilena Simons, who brings her brand consulting and creative eye for fashion to the boho boutique. We had the opportunity to check in with the owners and hear more about the inspiration for Blossom Atalier.

As you curate items, what do you look for?

Blossom believes we all hold onto personal treasures often passed on from generation to generation. We look for meaning and great design and are inspired by what others have spent years collecting whether it be silver travel spoons or vintage vanity items and try to work them into a contemporary landscape in order to enhance the wellbeing and delight of their new owners.

Blossom Atelier

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere! Some of our favorite places are in nature, during our travels (Jam just brought back amazing treasures from Sayulita), new experiences and talking to Blossom customers.

What are some of your favorite spots or places for refuge in Los Angeles?

Many of the items from our store have come from our home! We love stopping by random garage sales and flea markets to stock up. We are constantly on the hunt for unique items to bring back to the store for our customers to give a new home.

Where have you traveled that has influenced Blossom?

We love to travel and some of the destinations that Hong Kong, Mexico, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, NYC, Northern California, Joshua Tree, and of course, Main Street in Santa Monica.

What do you hope to inspire in people coming into the store to visit, hang out, or shop?

We hope to inspire people to recognize the treasures they already have within themselves and to create their own personal style and home environments that reflect their inner beauty. Blossom offers one-of-a-kind home decor and fashion to inspire people to discover their own home and fashion statements.

Ele Keats Jewelry Store

The storefront of Ele Keats Jewelry on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica offers a glimpse into the designer’s intentions.

When I first walked into Ele Keats Jewelry at Ele’s August grand opening, I immediately felt the sense of intention that this designer and yoga and meditation practitioner creates in the space and in the beautiful and healing objects she curates and designs. When Ele discovered this Montana Avenue location two years ago, she knew it was her dream store.

Interior Ele Keats Jewelry

Ele Keats Jewelry Displays

Fast forward to 2016 when the corner shop became available; Ele moved in and designed the space to highlight the gems and become Ele Keats Jewelry. Fortunately, ample sunlight bathes them in natural light. “We have natural elements and a feeling of floating in the clouds to embody both Heaven and Earth.” Floating shelves, white walls, lucite and steel create this environment, along with ancestral prayers wafting through the air. While the staff treat each customer with love, Ele says her parrotlet Little Blue is one of the most important members of the team. “Birds naturally clear the energy of a space and Little Blue is just a very special and intuitive little bird. She goes with me while I’m sourcing my crystals and has been a key element in helping me choose the stones.”

Ele Keats and her bird

Ele Keats’ bird helps choose energetic stones.

Ele Keats offers everything from fine jewelry (one of her signature pieces is an emerald necklace) including engagement and wedding rings, to pieces inspired by the works of Ele’s teacher Eckhart Tolle, crystals to support sound sleep, and multifaceted natural gems. Everything is ethically sourced and chosen with care. Ele says, “What inspires me now is crystals in their natural form, and being able to highlight their one-of-a-kind beauty in their most organic and fluid form of jewelry. Although much of my jewelry is cut, finished stones with an emphasis on colored stones, I love setting crystals in 18 karat gold and honoring their natural forms.”

Ele Keats Jewelry Design Necklace

Ele Keats hand selects powerful gemstones for gorgeous jewelry.

Surrounded by all the beauty, Ele maintains perspective. “I see myself as a shepherd herding crystals to their proper owners.”

Some of the ways in which we move the body through variations of poses are as important as the poses themselves. The latest performance gear allows students and practitioners of all levels to bend and stretch with ease. These leggings by Eagle Rock Werkshop are hand-crafted in Los Angeles from compression fabric made in Italy. Original designs by artist Chriztina Marie (aka Tina Z) like the octopus tentacles winding up yogini Ellette’s legs add a creative whimsy to practice. The bra top by Los Angeles-based activewear experts Funky Diva is soft on the skin and suitable for a variety of different poses and fitness activities. Ellette is wearing bracelets by Five Star Hippie. Designer Janine is a NYC native who visited Los Angeles and captivated by the sun and surf—stayed on the West Coast to build her spirit-inspired jewelry company which supports ocean conservation initiatives.

While yoga is an individual practice, sharing a class with other people can be a powerful motivator and a fun community building event. Here, Kate and Ellette match poses and outfits in a variation of King Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana). They are both wearing the new Loving Bra by Electric Yoga. One of the places to buy Electric Yoga in LA is at fashion designer Michele Boubot’s Namastday Yoga Studio in Beverly Hills.

Kate and Ellette paired the Loving Bra with pants by Bohemian Island. The Thai company’s harem pants are comfortable enough to live in and perfect to practice in. Bohemian Island’s pants are hand-stiched with a noticeable attention to detail and 10% of proceeds support the Soi Dog Foundation on Phuket, an organization who looks after 1,000 stray dogs and cats and advocates for animal adoption.

Forward folds are poses of surrender, of letting go of the tension we are carrying, of stretching the back of the body, and of reversing the effects of hours at a computer, sitting at a desk, or driving a car. In general, yoga helps us to feel a greater sense of ease an connection throughout the rest of our day. In this pose, Ellette is outfitted in some of the latest fashion forward styles from the brand Tantris. Founded by hip hop legend and dedicated yogi Russell Simmons, Tantris offers apparel for yoga enthusiasts of all levels.

Sometimes in practice, we want to see just how far we can reach. In this variation of the arm balance side plank (vasisthasana), Kate’s reach creates a satisfying side stretch. The pose showcases the open back of the Goddess Cami Workout Top by Sthenos. The form-fitting yet lightweight cami design allows the top to move with the body in a variety of yoga poses as well as other workout activities. The fashion-forward style is also suitable to pair with jeans or to wear out dancing.

Kate is wearing leggings by Prana, with this season’s trend of different color panels in a soft gray on gray that can mix and match with numerous hues. The Buddha Bracelet by Gogh Jewelry Design is one of Szilvia Gogh’s creations that infuse a sense of spirit and positivity into everyday jewelry. The Buddha Bracelet is stacked with bracelets by Five Star Hippie.

Sometimes performance wear is perfect for a moment of contemplation. Kate Hinkens takes a break in a variation of the classic seated pose gomukasana, or cow’s head pose. She is wearing a tank and leggings by Prana. The Southern California-based company uses a number of sustainable fabrics in their yoga clothing including organic cotton and recycled polyester.

Prana’s styles can be found at locations including REI, Rancho la Peurta, select studios, their website, and their retail store in Manhattan Beach. Kate is also wearing the Shashi Star Regular Toe Socks. With just a little bit of sparkle, these socks are perfect for both comfort and performance. Designer Natalie Lerch created the Shashi because she was looking for just the right socks for the barre and Pilates classes she loves. The combination of grip, feel, and fashion make these a go-to for cross-training and beyond.

Important: Shashi website is incorrect in the magazine. It should be www.shashionline.com

Mesh is an enduring trend in activewear. Whether we love it for the increased breathability of performance clothing or the element of fashion-forward fun, many of us choose something more than basic. Evolve Love in Action’s Va Va Leggings live up to their name. Made in the USA from four-way stretch fabric, these moisture-wicking quick-dry leggings are named with love for the Portuguese grandmother (Va Va) of Evolve’s founder Jason Leon. The Va Va Leggings pair well with the Donna racerback bra, named for another inspirational woman. The supportive and breathable sports bra fabric is spun from recycled plastic bottles.

To support Evolve’s mission of Love in Action, the brand partners with nonprofit organizations so that each piece of clothing purchased supports a social giveback, such as feeding homeless youth in US cities or educating schoolchildren escaping from the sex trade. Designer Janine’s Five Star Hippie line, with its eco-conscious mandate to support ocean conservation initiatives, is a perfect accessory.

Some of the best poses to counteract our habits of too much time sitting are lunges, including crescent pose variations since they stretch muscles such as the quadriceps and hip flexors. In this slight backbending variation, Ellette is wearing a jacket by Buddhaful. This LA-based clothing company is known for their festival-friendly layering pieces that perpetuate the ethos of positivity through art, music, and practice. The Crop Jacket is part of Buddhaful’s Frequency collection. The fit allows the jacket to move with the body with ease and the graphic on the black on black jacket represents love.

Ellette’s bra and leggings are made by entrepreneur, avid meditator, and yogi Russell Simmons’ new line Tantris. Clothing will be on display at the upcoming studio opening in West Hollywood in Fall, 2016. To cushion her back knee in the pose, Ellette is utilizing Yoga Rat’s comfy Rat Pad.

Dedicated yogini Ada Hung believes that performance wear should also be fun and fashionable. Her company Balini Sports delivers. In firefly pose (titibhasana), Kate Hinkens is wearing the Aime Yoga Bra in Stone and the Diva Leggings in black and stone. The Diva Leggings’ stirrup bottom keeps the pants stable in any position and prevents bunching as you flow through a vinyasa or other sequence. Balini Sports’ four-way stretch non-see-through fabrics are made with eco-responsible low-waste technologies allowing you to wear your commitment on your sleeve—or ankle. Kate is also wearing a mala from one of the gorgeous designs produced by Mala Collective.

Ellette demonstrates that balancing asks us to engage in the art of concentration and focus. When we practice a pose like bakasana, or crow pose, on the surface of a Bosu ball, it ups the game allowing us to really test our practice. Ellette has her hands on the new Bosu Sport Balance Trainer. The compact size allows this piece of fitness gear to be easily transported and stored for practice.

The sports bra by Prana holds up even when you are upside down, as Ellette demonstrated here. For Evelina Poghosyan’s new yoga line InstaFit, she bases her designs on the four elements of air (creativity), fire (personal power), water (fantastic relationships), and earth (successful career) so that each items of clothing is in alignment with our practice. InstaFit is made in LA out of fabrics made from recycled bottles and eco-friendly dyes. Ellette is wearing the Soul Cleansing leggings by InstaFit. In addition, Ellette’s ring is part of the yoga-inspired Silver Collection by jewelry designer Sonja Picard.

YOGASMOGA takes high-performance yoga clothing to the next level.

When we embrace the philosophy of yoga, it affects all aspects of our lives beyond the mat. Sister and brother team Tapasya and Rishi Bali founded the company YOGASMOGA on the principle that our practice also influences our clothing. The name is a play on the Hindi tradition of rhyming words and names, and reflects their lighthearted yet devoted dedication to yoga. YOGASMOGA’s lines of men’s and women’s high-performance wear is made in the USA from proprietary technological fabrics and colored with eco-friendly inks.

The clothes are made to be resistant to piling and contain high stretch qualities and advanced moisture management. Their black color—known as Carbon 6—is so dark that they’ve trademarked it; the black YOGASMOGA pieces will stay black after numerous washings.

YOGASMOGA began with an online retail portal and have been adding brick-and-mortar stores. The country’s first opened in Greenwich, Connecticut, their first SoCal store is on San Vicente in Brentwood, and their newest location opened in July 2015 in Beverly Hills near Rodeo Drive. The Beverly Hills store provides a peaceful respite in which to experience the brand’s spirit of wellness and community. The interior is an ode to Mother Nature, resembling a forest with sleek wooden boning that flows throughout the space.  At the core of the venue, the hardwood melds together in a sculpture that recalls Namaste prayer hands.

The company’s Namaskar Foundation supports micro-loan initiatives and educational programs in developing regions. Products such as hand-woven bracelets sold by YOGASMOGA benefit the foundation.

Even more Southern California stores are in development (La Jolla, Corte Madera, Newport Beach, and Malibu). Expansion is in the works for New York, San Francisco, and Boston. Contact any of the stores to book a personalized SMOGI style and fitting session.

Fit Gal’s Closet in La Quinta offers active wear for all types of workouts.

Although the practice of yoga inherently helps us to feel more beautiful and confident in our own bodies, sometimes the images of idealized beauty surrounding us can have the opposite effect. Instead of perpetuating this culture by catering to just a certain body type, Fit Gals Closet is taking an inclusive approach. This womens-only fitness and leisure wear boutique in La Quinta the Palm Springs area opened in February 2015 and sells clothing for every fit galfrom size XS to XXL. Owner Marci Falldorf says, The idea behind the store was to have something for everybody. Everyone who works at the shop believes in this and takes the time to help shoppers find the right fit matching function with fashion.

Whether your favorite way to break a sweat is on the mat or on the golf course, tennis court, running path, barre class, bike, or gym, this store has something for your workout, as well as a selection of casual loungewear, skirts, and dresses. Fit Gals Closet also offers instructors and studio owners a 15% discount on all merchandise, which includes clothing from popular brands including Prana, Lucy, Soybu, and Zobha.

Beginning this fall, the store will offer specialty classes such as PiYo and yoga for golf. If you dont live in the desert region, youre not missing out as you can peruse the Fit Gals inventory online. Youll find some affordable prices and versatile outfits to add flair to your practice.

If you are anything like me, you love any excuse to dress up for a party. What better party is there than the Fourth of July, complete with a theme of colors tried and true?

When we consider these hues, we might ask: Who are the wearers of the red, white and blue? Is there a deeper meaning to the colors we wear and why? And what about your style—is it conservative, authoritative, easy breezy, or a wardrobe full of hand-me-downs? If you stop and consider your options and listen to the voices in your head, you may find there is a whole lot of chatter going on. Whose voices are those and do you agree with what they are telling you?

I believe that we all dress and present ourselves, using color and style, according to archetypes that reveal our fashion icon personalities. Archetypes, as described by Plato, are mental collective forms imprinted in the soul before it was born. Carl Jung adds that these collective forms are innate universal prototypes for ideas that may be used to interpret observations.

This means that in our unconsciousness there exists a committee of hundreds of personalities voicing their opinions and influences on our choices. When we observe how we dress, how we walk, how we respond to the ups and downs of life, we may have a better idea of who is running the show. I have observed a number of archetypes or characters and I have identified 10 Fashion Icon Archetypes. We can interpret which archetypes are most influential when we pay attention to who we are, how we dress, and how we show up in the world.

Archetypes are also related to the symbols that are part of our everyday life. For example, the symbols that adorn our flag have hidden messages to inspire integrity and honor; stars and stripes represent beliefs, values, and traditions. While these symbols may change over time, they bind us together as a nation by reminding us of our history and our principles.

Let me introduce you to what I refer to as The Ambassador Fashion Icon Archetype:

Think of First Lady Michelle Obama wearing the soft, flowery white chiffon inauguration dress for her first public appearance: in white, she sent the message of peace and goodwill. After four years in office as FLOTUS, the President’s wife earned her stripes, so to speak, and at the second inauguration she wore what the press called victory red. Never before has a First Lady been so bold. This demonstrates the personality of this archetype, a person who seeks value in all they wear and do.

The Ambassador Fashion Icon Archetype is a class act that evokes a certain status and success. Ambassadors of fashion love quality, name brands, and tailored looks. Through this intentional way of dressing, they influence and educate. The character Olivia Pope on Scandal is styled in such a way that she radiates her authoritative warrior and her triumphant gladiator persona through her well-thought-out style, taking command of any room the moment she enters.

In their best expression and their light side, Ambassadors are protective humanitarians; their shadow is headstrong and arrogant. Yet they may also have hidden professional agendas with sparks of naivety that fly like fireworks in the sky. No wonder America gets itself in trouble sometimes! But let’s not judge this archetype unfairly because the Ambassadors seek to be used in service for the greater good.

My most notable example of the Ambassador Fashion Icon Archetype is and always will be Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Who can ever forget the pink hat Jackie wore the day America lost its most beloved Democratic President? That fashionable pillbox, designed by Halston, illustrated a sign of the times—a poignant metaphor for the first time Americans had a pill for everything (like the baby blue valium prescribed to calm one’s nerves and the contraceptive little pink pill that symbolized the 60’s sexual revolution.)

As an image consultant and style writer, I embody the Ambassador Fashion Icon as my most dominant archetype. The qualities of authority, wisdom, experience, and grace inherent in the ambassador in me give me the audacity to ask these questions of you, “Who are you and why do you wear what you wear?”

The Messages in Red, White and Blue

Red is the color of courage and strength. Red stands for power, influence and authority. Wear red to make a bold statement.

For some of you white is the old black. White embodies the message of purity, cleanliness, charity, and chastity.

For others, the new black is blue. Blue is the color of diplomacy and truth as well as the left-brain message of truth. Wearing blue, whether a dress or a tie, communicates sincerity.

How do you take command when you walk into a boardroom, a ballroom, or a classroom? I invite you to consider your personal style and see how the leader, boss, author, or expert is reveled in how you dress and what you do. The Ambassador archetype may not govern your style—perhaps you are a Maverick, a Spartan, or an Alchemist—but I know there’s one lurking somewhere in your psyche!  So for the Fourth, let your flag fly and sport the red, white, and blue.
