5 Tips for How to Have Healthy Skin from Within

Holiday traditions that we love range from sipping on warm spiked cider, enjoying fresh-baked sugar cookies, and taking long walks in the windy, brisk, even snowy air. With these winter wonders also comes increased risk of dehydration, inflammation, and stripping of the skin’s protective surface.

Implement These Internal Supports for Healthy Skin

1. Consider reducing alcohol consumption.

During the holiday season we tend to increase intake due to parties and cozy nights inside and with that comes dehydration of the body and especially the skin.

Try consciously planning when to drink and follow it up with increased water consumption. If you generally drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily (for example, a person who weighs 160 pounds may want to drink at least 80 ounces of water daily), add an additional 8-12 ounces of water per alcoholic drink.

2. Try some supplements to heal the effects of alcohol.

Thiamine, which is B1,  is often the most depleted B vitamin as a result of drinking alcohol. Try having a thiamine supplement or B-complex with thiamine daily. Additionally, Glutathione is our body’s strongest antioxidant and helps quickly reduce oxidants in the blood that can trigger inflammation of the skin. Take glutathione (away from other vitamins) to keep oxidants out of your liver and your skin!

3. Use Healthy Oils for Winter Air Repair

The dry winter air can strip the top layers of skin, removing the protective barrier by decreasing circulation and removing healthy oils.

To keep your skin hydrated, try increasing healthy oils in your meals such as avocado oil, Alaskan fresh-caught salmon, macadamia nuts, coconut oil, and chia seeds. Externally, you can also add extra coconut oil, olive oil, or shea butter to your daily routine to increase skin barrier protection. You can find these in the Evanhealy brand or ours, Deep Living Skincare.

4. Induce Sweating for Healthy Skin from Within

To combat reduced circulation in the skin from cold or windy air, try planning cardio exercises that induce sweating. This will bring fresh blood flow (and with that, collagen building factors) to your skin to even the tone, hydrate and plump the skin, and to eliminate any built-up toxins.

5. Yes! You can Supplement your Skin

In the fall and early winter, we tend to focus on immune support. Did you know that some of the most important immune system supportive vitamins are also fantastic for healing skin and reversing aging?

For example, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) is flying off the shelves due to its immune supportive effects, but its ability to increase glutathione and reduce inflammation in the blood also reduces redness and inflammation in the skin.

Vitamin A is an immune-boosting must, and in high enough doses (generally over 1000 mcg for an adult) it is powerful at stopping breakouts. Vitamin C is second only to glutathione as the body’s best antioxidant. It heals skin damage including fine lines and cracks by increasing collagen and elastin.

When purchasing, look for trusted brands that keep fillers and dyes out, and high-quality nutrients in. These brands include Pure Encapsulations, Integrative Therapeutics, Designs for Health, and our line, Skin Within by Deep Living. Have a happy, healthy, and glowing holiday!

Why We Need to Practice Safe Sun Care

We may be looking for some of the depression-lifting effects of time outdoors, seeking an infusion of Vitamin Sunshine, planning a beach day, taking our practice to a studio without walls, or needing to shift away from screen time. When going outside, it’s important to practice safe sun care. Consider the following four suggestions for keeping your skin healthy in and out of the sun. Here’s to sun salutations in the sunshine!

1. Optimize Vitamin D By Planning Safe Sun Exposure

You can count on lifting your mood, increasing bone strength, and heightening your immune system by increasing Vitamin D. But you may not realize the importance of planning your sunshine time when it comes to optimizing your body’s Vitamin D metabolism.

For safety, avoid midday sun exposure. Burning your skin will not optimize Vitamin D intake, plus it will cause harm! Consider getting about 20 minutes of mid-morning or late-afternoon sun light (without sunscreen) to optimize Vitamin D levels. For best results, practice this as close to daily as possible.

Science on Vitamin D and our Individual Nature

Every skin type absorbs Vitamin D at different levels due to varying amounts of melanin (which absorbs UV rays and reduces Vitamin D synthesis). As individuals, we also hydroxylate Vitamin D at different rate. Vitamin D travels through the liver and kidney before becoming active (1,25-dihydroxy Vitamin D). Your overall health profile and organ function are key elements to how much Vitamin D you utilize after absorption.

In addition, most people need more Vitamin D than they get from being in the sun. Consider speaking with your naturopathic doctor, functional medicine provider, or member of your healthcare team about having your blood levels of Vitamin D tested. You might want to add Vitamin D supplement with the addition of a Vitamin K2 driver, since these two act synergistically with each other.

Suggestions for Vitamin D Supplementation

K Force by Ortho Molecular or our Skin Within supplement by Deep Living (This contains other healing vitamins and herbs for skin and immune health)

Common food sources for Vitamin D

Shiitake and white mushrooms, fatty fish, eggs, soy, cheese

2. Props to Support Safe Sun Exposure: Hats, Breathable long sleeves, and Sunglasses

If you have been indoors more than usual this past year-and-a-half (as many people have), chances are your skin may be very sensitive currently. While you may want to visit the beach with just a little sunscreen and play all day, consider adding more complete coverage.

Hats offer more protection than even the best sunscreens..and they can be fashionable!

In an effort to further protect your arms and legs consider long sleeve breathable cotton or linen fabrics that block UV rays but allow ocean breezes. You can also look for UPF-rated clothing.

Sunglasses protect your eyes from harsh rays. Your eyes may have had a lot of blue light exposure and felt strain from excess screen time lately. As your eyes heal and adjust to more outdoor time, prioritize keeping them safe and hydrated.

3. Read labels: Review Ingredients

When you do put something on your skin. Empower yourself to have more control of your skin health! Titles can be misleading. Just because a bottle has a flower on it or says “natural” does not mean it is clean or safe…or even that it includes mainly organic products.

Read labels and look for some of the following potentially harmful ingredients. Avoid these. They include EDTA, BPA, aluminum, parabens, artificial dyes, and fragrances.

Opt for products with shorter ingredient lists. This may include herbs, flowers, or vitamins you recognize. Always check the EWG (Environmental Working Group) website for the latest safety research, facts, and to see how product ingredients score in safety.

Vegan Notes

Avoid the following common animal-derived skincare ingredients: gelatin, tallow, lanolin, squalene, and collagen.

Read your Sunscreen Labels

For the ocean’s sake and yours’, consider only mineral-based sunscreens (such as those with zinc as a primary ingredient). Chemical sunscreens are banned in Hawaii as they cause reef deterioration. Look for reef-safe sunscreens. Also choose organic and fragrance-free options. Suggested brand: Earth Mama Organics

Products to Avoid

The Walgreens brand, Panama Jack, and Sun Bum spray (70). These are listed as the most harmful sunscreens on the market according to the EWG.

After Sun Practices

Take care of your skin and keep your safe sun practices going by rinsing off sweat, sand, and sunscreen after being outside. Rinsing reduces skin irritation and clears pores to allow for more skin breathability.

Nourishing creams and aloe gels post-sun are ideal for cooling and soothing. (The vegan line by Deep Living contains hemp, which is rich in omegas). Avoid oils if your skin is hot or burned.

4. Confident Skin From Within

Take care of your full-body health and wellness for beautiful skin. Suggestions for safe sun exposure can help reduce sun damage ranging from solar spots, dehydration, and fine lines from oxidation caused by excessive exposure to UV rays. However, for those struggling with skin concerns ranging from acne to eczema, consider seeing your integrative dermatologist or naturopathic doctor to determine the underlying cause of your concerns.

Our skin is our largest organ. When it acts up, it is trying to tell us what is going on in our bodies. Listen to these messages. Meditate on your skin health goals. Send yourself love and support, knowing you are perfect just as you are. Give your body the love and support to heal.

For more positive skin affirmations use this Amazing Skin Meditation.

Have fun outdoors and practice safe sun daily!

Receive the Most Benefits from Your Massage

The best massages often include preparation. These expert tips help you receive the greatest benefits during and after your massage treatment.

1. Just Show Up

The most important thing to do to get ready for a treatment is to just show up. Don’t allow anything to override this time you set aside for yourself. By showing up it sends a powerful message to the universe that you believe you deserve it and are worth it.

2. Plan Ahead

When you’ve made the commitment to a spa or massage day, let that commitment start before your appointment. Don’t party the night before; having residual intoxicants in the system can end up making you feel nauseous, unwell, or lightheaded during or after a treatment. Especially if you will be using steam or sauna pre- or post-treatment. Eat lightly. Having a full stomach when receiving a treatment can be uncomfortable.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate Hydrate

Take it easy and drink lots of clean fluids like room temperature water and warm herbal tea after your treatment. Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate you even more than usual post-massage, which is a reason to imbibe carefully or even cut back. All forms of massage increase circulation throughout the lymphatic system, so you may experience more elimination of fluids, requiring more hydration to rebalance.

4. Soak and Supplement

Your body will be detoxing and readjusting. If you feel body soreness, that isn’t unusual and it can be a good sign. It means something shifted. If you find yourself achey the day after a treatment an Epsom salt bath will help. A big bag of salts can be procured at any drug store for about $7. I tell all my clients to keep Epsom salts in the house as they can reduce swelling and promote relaxation. Increasing your magnesium intake can also assist with any post-massage pain and help you sleep.

5. Restorative Practices

Scheduling in a restorative or gentle yoga class a day or two after a massage can also boost the process of assimilating the positive after-effects. This energetic support is helpful because you may feel more emotional after a massage. Massage is powerful medicine that can unblock stagnant energy so crying also isn’t out of the ordinary. If tears show up let them flow. It’s cleansing.

Deliciously Ella tests natural skin care for her line with Neal’s Yard.

One of the ways in which we both nourish and protect our skin is through moisturizing. Layering a light lotion with a mist or spray toner is both a soothing and supportive combination. Solutions for skin care for travelers can be found among products from skin care lines with botanical ingredients that are good enough to eat. Many of these ingredients have powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Some of these include lime, lemongrass, rose, cucumber, reishi, fulvic acid, and edible minerals.

Lemongrass for Natural Skin Care

Lemongrass is a favorite ingredient in products such as Eminence Rosehip & Lemongrass Soothing Hydrator and jane iredale Lemongrass Love Hydration Spray. According to Adina Diaz, Your Skin Care Guru, “Lemongrass is a natural antibacterial and astringent that reduces breakouts, unclogs the pores, and clears oil and dead skin cells away. Lemongrass also has powerful emotionally uplifting effects.”

Spritzes and Sprays for Natural Skin Care

Facial sprays and mists are one of my favorite go-to items as I am both a makeup artist and a resident of a hot, dry climate. They are wonderful for adding a bit more moisture to your face and for refreshing or setting your makeup after powder. Taking a small facial spritz with you on the plane is a great way to keep your skin from drying out on your journey.

You can purchase or make these kinds of sprays. If you choose to DIY, just take a small spray bottle with cool water, add a couple drops of your favorite essential oils like lavender, sweet orange, or lemongrass—and enjoy!

This full-body and facial moisturizer is both lightweight and effective. It also softens skin quickly upon application. Ingredients include rosehip, lemongrass and aloe. 5 fl oz ($48) eminenceorganics.com

Facial Mist with Rose Hydrosol & Reishi Toning Coconut by Alaffia

The reishi mushroom is a beloved superfood used to help strengthen vitality. Alaffia has added it to one of their skincare lines. According to the fair trade company’s Communication Director Shane Hart, “Studies show Reishi is nourishing, helps skin adapt to environmental stresses, and fights lines.” This mist has a bit more texture than some other facial sprays, allowing it to add lasting hydration to the skin. 3.4 fl oz ($11.99) alaffia.com

How I Found Slow Beauty

My relationship with Slow Beauty came through my own practice. About eight years ago while I was going through the motions of checking multiple emails, voicemails, and social media accounts, I realized that the world had changed forever.

To a certain extent, the changes are positive. We are becoming more connected (virtually), and the exchange of information is easier than ever. Yet on the flip side, this social growth spurt has raised the bar on our busyness and distractibility. We’ve ushered in our new era of rampant stress punctuated with ever-increasing rates of anxiety and depression.

I noticed that I was more disconnected from myself in a way I had never felt before. With that came waves of loneliness, melancholy, and existential musings. I was beginning to do some deep thinking on the implications of a world that showed absolutely no signs of slowing down.

I had already been practicing meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda for almost a decade, yet I felt I had to hunker down even more into my self-care philosophy in order to protect and fortify myself from the frenzy of the external world. My mother’s mantra was, “Health is wealth.” From a young age she taught me the importance of paying attention to what I put on and in my body. We frequented spas—not to luxuriate but for renewal and restoration.

Our Wellness is a Connected Practice

The often elusive intersection of health, wellness, and beauty is something I’ve always known and understood. As someone who works in the beauty industry, I am aware that the current culture of beauty consumption is muddied with superficialities, quick fixes, and instant results. Yet I had always felt diametrically opposed to this anti-aging credo. I sought depth, meaning, and purpose from beauty as an eternal truth. Simultaneously, I felt determined to ground myself in a self-care practice that would allow my inner beauty to unfold and blossom in its own due time.

At the time of my self-inquiry, we were hosting a special houseguest. The guest: my son’s kindergarten class pet, Torti (you guessed it) the tortoise. Torti brought a unique kind of medicine into our home over the two-week period we cared for him. He had his own special pace and it didn’t matter how fast we were moving, Torti took his time, always. Torti’s movements were not only slow, they appeared deliberate, purposeful, and even mindful.

The Satori Moment of Slow Beauty

Watching Torti, I had what in the Zen tradition is known as a Satori moment. The phrase “Slow Beauty” came to mind. In an instant, I had a name for a philosophical approach to self-care. Slow Beauty is a self-care approach that allowed me (and hopefully others) to define their own standard of beauty, in their own time and with their own flair.

A Slow Beauty practice is meant to help ground you in deep and meaningful self-care through recipes and rituals. It is first and foremost a philosophy that helps you make a strong and lasting connection to your self. Slow Beauty is a reminder to literally slow down and become self-reflective as well as a passionate activist for your self-care.

Philosophy of Slow Beauty

Philosophically speaking, Slow Beauty is about designing your inner life, the beauty radiant, always sourced from within. It is inspired by the axiom “as above, so below.” Through Slow Beauty, we learn to seek our internal counsel. We contextualize our own personal beauty standards instead of getting caught up in the frenzy of chasing unattainable standards set by others.

Slow Beauty is also an organizing principle to suit the personal standards you have set in motion. There are many incredible wellness and well-being options; the abundance of offerings is stunning. With so many choices, it is important to select those that make sense to you personally. Slow Beauty encourages you to choose sustainable options for long-term benefit.

Begin by understanding your natural rhythms. Just like the changing external seasons, we too have our very own mutable internal seasons, each with specific needs, longings, desires, and expressions. With Slow Beauty, we honor this process of always becoming. Slow Beauty is the antithesis of quick fixes, instant results and invasive surgeries. Meditations, deep breathing techniques, self-reflective thinking, whole foods, beauty care and movement that are seasonally appropriate set the tone for practice.

I’ve compiled these practices into my new book Slow Beauty that is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

A Day in the Life of a  Slow Beauty Practice

AM First Light

Immediately upon waking go outside and expose yourself to the natural light. It may sound counterintuitive, but exposing yourself to the natural light in the morning helps jumpstart melatonin production to ensure a good night’s sleep when it’s time to go to bed.

Tea Time

A vegan matcha latte is one of my favorite tea options. Try utilizing some fresh herbs from your garden. I love fresh basil with a drop of early harvest olive oil as a Teatox. Among many benefits, basil helps to improve memory and is a perfect remedy to brain haze.

Movement

I like improvisational dance as well as boxing. I’ve recently discovered Fierce & Foxy in Hollywood, an all-women’s boxing program. Boxing helps to shed some of the excess weight, keeps you toned all over, improves stamina, and helps you feel empowered. I think of Ali’s words, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” This is such a perfect mantra!

Body Rituals

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate, and then self-massage. These beauty rituals support skin cell renewal, increase circulation, detoxify, and purify. The result: renewed skin that is toned with a healthy glow.

One of the products I use is the sugar scrub and body oil from the SpaRitual Passionfruit Agave Skincare for Body collection. The products in this collection are packed with certified organic and nature-derived ingredients to deeply nourish and renew skin. The natural scent is uplifting, and the formula’s textures are rich and delightful.

Slow Beauty Spa Ritual Passionfruit Scrub

Face/Make-up

Each year I do a  sweep of my make-up products to refresh and renew. I recently went to Credo Beauty where they were helpful in recommending some incredible products that I absolutely love. These include Ilia Multi-Stick for lips and cheeks, Juice Beauty mascara, Jillian Dempsey Khol Eyeliner, and Josh Rosebrook’s Hydrating Accelerator. Oh, and I also love Trilogy CoQ10 Booster Oil for fine lines, and RMS “un” cover-up, and lip and skin balm.

Slow Beauty Shel Pink Beauty Products LA YOGA

Breathe

I recommend the Breath of Joy from the Kripalu tradition. This breathing technique immediately awakens and heightens all of your senses.

Nature Immersions

I am fortunate to live adjacent to Runyon Canyon where I hike almost every day. I love immersing myself in nature and hiking high above the city to get a bird’s eye view. Spending time in nature is soothing to the central nervous system, increases memory, boosts productivity, and improves concentration.

I enjoy nature inside my home as well with fresh cut flowers from my garden. The art of arranging flowers elevates your mood, decreasing stress and anxiety. A behavioral study at Rutgers University found that the presence of flowers in the home increased intimacy between family and friends.

Slow Beauty Runyon Canyon Shel Pink LA YOGA

How Slow Beauty has Changed my Life

Ever since I honed my various self-care practices under the umbrella of Slow Beauty, I am more focused and purposeful about self-care and self-love. I am more grounded and confident in living my life at my pace. I feel better equipped to identify and articulate my needs. Once I understand those needs, I have immediate access to the tools and resources to satisfy them. I feel more present, more creative, and more relaxed with my family, friends and co-workers. Most importantly I feel more joy, more often.

In our increasingly fast-paced world, “slow” has become a buzzword for movements that remind us to be more mindful and to nurture ourselves. My response to the fast world: I am always busy slowing down, grounded in my Slow Beauty practice. When we care for our selves in deep and meaningful ways, we are best able to care for others and life itself.

Whether you are training for a 5K, 10K, half-marathon, or even the full 26 miles, skincare is vital. Running the trails outdoors leaves your skin exposed to the elements. Both sun and wind can create challenges for the skin.

Maintaining healthy, supple skin can be achieved with these products and services tailored to sun protection, detoxification, and hydration. Nourishing yourself – including your skin – is a daily practice.

Check out some of our favorite skincare products

1. Sweat Cosmetics

sweat-cosmetics-skincare

Founded by a group of professional and Olympic athletes looking for sweat-friendly skincare solutions for people on the go, these products deliver.

One of our faves is the Mineral Foundation SPF30 + Twist Brush. The innovative, twist-to-open brush design is fully portable and enclosed when not in use so that the brush stays clean in a gym or yoga bag (and your bag stays free of residue as well).

The anti-oxidant and Vitamin E-rich mineral powder also contains ingredients such as anti-inflammatory milk thistle. It is available in a variety of shades.

We also love the individually wrapped cleansing towelettes with hydrating coconut water, detoxifying green tea, and nourishing Vitamin E. They’re a perfect on-the-go skin freshening go-to.

2. John Masters Organics

john-masters

Hydrating shea butter, anti-oxidant green tea, and pH balancing and moisturizing jojoba allow this suncare to be not only sun protective but skin nourishing. If your activities take you into the water, know that this mineral sunscreen is biodegradable and reef-friendly.

3. Osmotics

osmotics-group

When SPF meets skincare, you get Osmotics.

Age Prevention Protection Extreme SPF 45
This anti-oxidant-rich formula is oil-free for everyday use yet applies easily to the skin. Use under makeup for a daily anti-aging boost as well as protection from sun damage.

Age Prevention Sheer Facial Tint SPF 45
Brighten up your day with this splash of color combined with powerful sun protection. Multiple shades are available to accommodate every skin hue and the ingredients are safe for sensitive skin or after procedures. Mix with foundation or use alone.

4. Plain Jane Beauty

micellar_makeup_remover

Micellar Makeup Remover
Skincare expert and Beverly Hills Natural Feelings Spa owner Adina Diaz loves this eye makeup remover because it is so gentle—and so effective—that you don’t need to rinse. This go-to for pros is a perfect complement for an active lifestyle.

5. Lotus Moon

vitamin-c-duo

Lotus Moon describes their Hyaluronic Intensive Serum as a facial do-over button to repair damage to the skin. This is another one of Adina’s favorite products for its anti-oxidant rich ingredient list. Power players include Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, meadowfoam oil, and more.

Power of C Duo
Adina recommends this innovative product because Vitamin C, when combined with water, has a limited shelf life. This two-step, powder-based Vitamin C, when mixed with the Power Activator, creates an alchemical reaction for fresh, active Vitamin C to be delivered to the skin. The extra step is worth it when it comes to the nourishing effect.
In the Spa

Check out our favorite skincare service, Exhale Spa

Sometimes we need a little help when it comes to skin restoration and full-body recovery – a trip to the spa for a facial or a massage (or both). Exhale Spa Director, Laura Benge says that the benefits of massage therapy are cumulative; each sports massage builds upon the progress of the last session. Schedule with a therapist regularly.

Sports massage focuses on an athlete’s specific performance needs and at Exhale, we tailor the massage to the needs of the athlete with the goal of taking a body under stress and strain to being free-moving and stress free.

Exhale Spa

After Sun Facial
According to Exhale Spa Director Laura Benge, spending time outside in the elements can take a toll on the skin. She says that Exhale’s After Sun Facial is a carefully created protocol to take care of delicate, sun and wind burned skin.

Green tea extract, aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and other ingredients cool irritated skin while also hydrating. Whether repairing sun or wind damage, this 60-minute facial is a nourishing addition to an athlete’s routine. If you’re running the LA Marathon, schedule now.

Sports Massage
Since our skin is our largest organ in our body, the health of the skin is also affected by the state of our full-body circulation. Including a sports massage as part of a wellness regimen is helpful not only for muscle recovery, but for skin health.

Exhale Spa’s Sports Massage repairs fatigued muscles and can be a powerful stimulant for healthy lymphatic system circulation.

Sun Bella Apparel for Skin Protection

Our activities outdoors may range from  playing in or on the water, taking our fitness to the beach, attending a yoga and music festival, or simply going on a dog walk. Whatever we do throughout the year, it is important to utilize tools for skin protection and skin soothing.

Making sure that we are protecting and nourishing our skin positively impacts the health of the largest organ of our bodies.

Start with Skin Protection

According to UC Davis Assistant Professor of Clinical Dermatology and Dermveda Founder Dr Raja Sivamani, “Good sun protection habits start before you head outside. It involves smart choices about what clothes you wear, how you expose yourself to sunlight, and selecting the right sunscreen.” In addition, Dr Sivamani emphasizes that you can boost the antioxidants in your skin through diet (such as beta-carotene or astaxanthin) as well as what you put on your skin.

Sunscreens for Skin Protection

It can be intimidating to choose a sunscreen. The Environmental Working Group offers a Safer Sunscreen Guide that highlights ingredients to avoid such as parabens, oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, and SPFs above 50; ratings and recommended ingredients (such as zinc) are also listed.

When it comes to sun protection, Dr Sivamani’s advice is to “Choose sunscreens that have broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB with ingredients like zinc oxide and an SPF of at least 30.” Just applying once is not enough. Dr Sivamani suggests reapplying protection as often as every 15 minutes, especially if you are going in the water.

Dermveda is a another resource that includes a comprehensive skin health education library. This collection integrates multiple medical approaches to skin protection and care with Western and Eastern perspectives from a team of dermatologists and alternative medicine practitioners.

While we may remember to apply sunscreen on our bodies, it is also important to protect the lips. A number of companies, such as Babo Botanicals and Suntegrity, make products that are specifically designed for the sensitive skin on our lips.

Babo Botanicals

Babo Botanicals for Skin Protection and Skin Soothing

Babo Botanicas founder Kate Solomon integrates her belief in sustainable agriculture with skincare through Babo Botanicals’ product line. Their non-nano, zinc oxide-containing UVA and UVB broad-spectrum sunscreens are hypo-allergenic and suitable for all ages. Some of the nourishing ingredients include green tea extract, rose hip and jojoba seed oils, and shea butter. Their sun protection products include facial sunscreen, sport sticks, and conditioning lip tints and treatments. Prices vary. babobotanicals.com

Mad Hippie

Mad Hippie for Skin Protection and Skin Soothing

“More of the good stuff + none of the bad,” is Mad Hippie’s motto. Their blends rely on zinc oxide for 30+ UVA/UVB broad spectrum protection. Furthermore, the light scent and skin nourishing power comes from carrot seed, avocado, and red raspberry seed oils. Mad Hippie’s Facial SPF $24.99 madhippie.com

Suntegrity

Suntegrity for Skin Protection and Skin Soothing

After losing her mom to melanoma skin cancer, Suntegrity founder Tricia Trimble was motivated to work with chemists to develop a sun care line that is both nontoxic and nurturing. The non-nano-size zinc oxide UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sunscreens come in formulations for face, body, and lips. Ingredients include jojoba oil and shea and cocoa butter.

The moisturizing face sunscreen is available in four shades. In addition, the Lip CPR comes in eight different fashionable colors that can take you from the beach to the bar. Products and prices vary. suntegrityskincare.com

Dressing Up for Skin Protection

Sun Bella Apparel for Skin Protection

Sun Bella Apparel founder Denise Knickerbocker was looking for something fashionable that she could layer on to protect herself throughout the day. She designed the stylish and lightweight resort wear line of ponchos, wraps, sarongs, and gloves that have UPF ratings ranging from 30 to 50. A portion of sales of this LA-based company are donated to Women for Women and Oceana Foundations. sunbellapparel.com

Skin Soothing and Repair

Seaside Medical Response Gel for Skin Protection

Santa Monica-based dermatologist Nasimeh Yazdani was searching for a medical grade repairing topical lotion to send home with patients after their treatments.

She developed Seaside Medical’s Post-traumatic Response Gel. The gel is her own formulation free of alcohols, fragrances, or synthetic materials. Created in collaboration with a yoga instructor, the multi-use gel is full of functional ingredients. These include pain-relieving arnica, anti-inflammatory aloe vera and lavender, the anti-oxidant astaxanthin, as well as witch hazel, rosemary, and gotu kola.

Dr. Yazdani references the 75 active constituents in aloe vera alone, adding to the potency of the formula. In addition, she says that astaxanthin has 1,000 times the free radical pick up potency of Vitamin C. These are significant factors in the efficacy of the easily absorbed MatrX-B rich gel. This skin soothing formula is also compatible with the natural biome of our skin.

The original intent was to use this post-treatment. Yet Dr. Yazdani and her patients have found the gel to be an essential item in a skin-care repair kit. This is because it helps reduce inflammation after sun exposure and simultaneously promotes healing the cuts and scrapes that can arise from time outdoors, whether surfing, running, playing, or working. Seaside Medical Post-Traumatic Response Gel $25 seasidemedicaltech.com

Get Your Glow On

If you want the glow without the exposure try self-tanning formulations. True Natural Self Tan is full of organically grown ingredients that nourish the skin. Some of these are aloe vera, pomegranate, green tea, macadamia seed oil, and lavender.

The vegetable-based active ingredients (DHA and erythrulose) interact with amino acids in the skin to tan without the sun. When you get ready to apply, make sure to exfoliate thoroughly before using. Remember that self-tanning lotions do not contain SPF factors, so prepare your entire skin care regime accordingly. True Natural Self Tan $43 truenatural.com

The Detox Market In Santa Monica a Home for Green Beauty

The words “detox market” may evoke the idea of the trendiest new cleanse, but The Detox Market is a leader in the green beauty space. This retailer carefully curates a variety of lines of skin care, beauty, cosmetics (and yes, even some cleanse and detox products) that meet the exacting standards of both performance and purity. Founder and CEO Romain Gaillard says, “We recognize that there has been a significant shift in what clients are looking for – the beauty world needs a serious detox, and we are here to help. We want people to know they don’t need to choose between purity and efficacy!”

The Detox Market Curates beauty products

Gaillard founded The Detox Market in 2010. First it was a pop-up shop on Abbot Kinney in Venice. Now the The Detox Market also has a robust online presence, Beauty Corners in five Cafe Gratitude locations, two brick and mortar stores in Toronto. In LA, The Detox Market on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood, and now Santa Monica have opened.

When I walked in from Montana Avenue, I was struck by the coastal cottage vibe and clean, inviting space. The design is intentional. Gaillard says, “We want to reflect Santa Monica’s warm, California aesthetic in the look and feel of the space, so we designed the store to resemble a contemporary beach house where customers feel comfortable spending time discovering the latest that high-end clean beauty has to offer.”

The Detox Market Curating Green Beauty

The knowledgeable sales team is available seven days a week (10am through 6pm) to make recommendations and answer questions. Education is an important part of their mission to help people choose products that are focused on function and kindness to skin and the planet. Their carefully curated selection goes beyond beauty and skin care to include items for wellness and home care. Noteworthy brands include Tata Harper, Rahua, Ilia, Odocite, Kypris, and more, Ample testers mean that you can connect with products before making a purchase.

Beauty on Ice: Cold & Thirsty

One of the latest trends in beauty may be a little surprising, since it involves standing nearly naked in a chamber with temperatures as low as -240 F. Cryotherapy was originally developed in Japan and then studied in Europe before coming to the US. Cold & Thirsty is LA’s second location (and first on the Westside) offering sessions in a whole body cryosauna.

In addition to sessions of two minutes (or up to three) in the inflammation-reducing cold therapy chamber, Cold & Thirsty also offers organic cold-pressed juices and nut milk shakes by Renew Juicery and Mylk served in inert glass bottles. The blends with anti-inflammatory superfoods and medicinal herbs such as turmeric, astragalus, chaga, maca, and more. They can be purchased singly or in cleanse packages. Don’t miss the the subtle flavors of the lavender nut milk.

Chill out for the sake of beauty at the unique wellness designation created by Renew Juicery and Mylk creator Brooke Rewa and her business partner and cyrotherapy enthusiast Katie Kaufman.   Cold &Thirsty, 12460 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066. coldandthirsty.com

Yoga Entrepreneurs Launch YUNI, the first Yoga-inspired beauty brand

When I was introduced to Emmanuel Rey, cofounder and CEO of YUNI, a natural line of personal care products designed by and for yogis, it was a casual meeting at the French Market Cafe in Venice, a personal favorite for over a decade. A dear student and friend initiated the meeting; he had recently reunited with Emmanuel, his childhood schoolmate. The two grew up in the same small town in France, Emmanuel went on to earn an MBA, and my friend Arnaud Dunoyer established a career as a world-class musician. After decades without contact, they serendipitously found themselves living in the same city.

As we sat together, Arnaud and I were taken aback by Emmanuels passion and enthusiasm. He wanted my thoughts, as the owner of Yoga Nest, located in Venice, on how his products could serve my students. He shared his concept of YUNI, and the steps he was undertaking to create natural and sustainable products made with integrity.

Emmanuel and his wife Suzanne Dawson have enjoyed long and  successful careers in the beauty industry, working for L Oreal, Estee Lauder, and then Aveda for over 10 years. In 2012, the couple took a sabbatical to travel around the world and deepen their yoga practice, committing to an Ashtanga yoga teacher training in Greece.

In the midst of this immersion, Emmanuel and Suzanne connected with their fellow practitioners and recognized they shared three commonalities. First, most of the yogis lived in urban areas and were leading busy lives, which sometimes made it difficult to practice as frequently as they would like. Second, they agreed that they felt fantastic after practicing, but wished they could prolong that sensation. Finally, many mentioned that they would often experience magic moments during their practice or in the midst of Savasanaexperiences they longed to recreate throughout the day.

After three years of research and development, the couple began to develop YUNI.  The tagline of their high-performing beauty line is Seekers of Good and they take the mission seriously, with products designed to cultivate magic on and off the mat. They refer back to the yogic commonalities creating products with three purposes: increasing convenience, enhancing everyday pleasures, and anchoring yoga moments by recalling the ease and relaxation of savasana throughout the day.

One year after our meeting, I received a follow-up call from Emmanuel wanting to share samples from the ready-to-launch YUNI line – comprised of 13 personal care products. When I tested them, I could feel the vision. Some of my favorites include the Active Calm Face Serum (love the lingering hydration), Instant Shower Sheets (made from biodegradable bamboo pulp), and my number onethe Muscle Recovery Gel.

YUNI body mist serum and moisturizing concentrate

The line as a whole embodies a feeling of synergy, from the  yogic lifestyle as well as the natural ingredients. Emmanuel and Suzanne capitalized on their beauty experience and chose the best botanicals (often fair trade and organic) that enhance beauty including: turmeric root, arnica flower extract, argan nut oil, shea nut butter, buriti nut oil, edelweiss and echinacea plant stem cells, baobab fruit oil, peppermint leaf essential oil, kukui nut oil, neem leaf extract, green tea leaf extract, aloe vera juice, and pure aromatic essential oils.

The peppermint, arnica, and aloe-based Muscle Recovery Gel works wonders on sore muscles, and the rollerball applicator provides a massage during application. Details matter and innovation feels good! The No-Rinse Body Cleansing Foam works as a transition from hot yoga even to hot date and the Instant Shower Sheets are immediately refreshing. The Microveil Hair Treatment is activated by heat and is a convenient mist to shift a bad to rad hair day. Designed for use during Savasana, the Body Balance Aroma Concentrate contains bergamot, neroli, and sage to soothe the mind. With repeated use, you begin to associate the scents with savasana and then you can spritz the similarly formulated Aromatic Body Mist to recreate the essence of savasana any timeeven during rush hour. It works. Botanicals benefit practice.

YUNI is found at participating retailers, YogaWorks, or online at: yunibeauty.com.

Picture this: A mushroom (well, really a fungus), grown on the backs of caterpillars, that not only improves mental energy but increases sexual vigor and athletic performance.

It may sound miraculous, yet practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have long understood the benefits of cordyceps, also known as “vegetable caterpillar.” Taken topically or orally, the unique herb has been shown to increase oxygen intake, energy levels, and blood flow. It is a powerful antioxidant and immune system modulator. Traditionally found in the wilds of Tibet and Bhutan, cordyceps are now cultivated in other ares of the world for consistency and affordability.

A ‘shroom that comes in many forms, here are our top picks:

Bobbi Brown SKIN SERUM FOUNDATION - GROUPIntensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 40, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

I learned about the energy and skin-enhancing qualities of the cordyceps mushroom with the help of a TCM practitioner in Shanghai,” says founder of the eponymous skincare line Bobbi Brown. Brown incorporates the ingredient into the lightweight Intensive Skin Serum Foundation, which, over time, energizes the skin and helps it look smoother, lifted, more even-toned, and radiant. bobbibrowncosmetics.com, 1 fl oz $62,

Cordyceps Drink Mix, Four Sigma Foods

The Finish founder of Four Sigma Foods, Tero Isokauppila, says cordyceps can increase cellular ATP levels by up to 50%. Munchable Cordyceps, Dragon Herbs

SkinAgain – Vegan, Gluten-free and Cruelty-free Skin Care

SkinAgain founder Sherrie Berry developed the formulations for her line of skincare products out of personal necessity. A 2006 chemical explosion left her with severe burns on her face, neck and arms. Today, she has beautiful skin. What she calls functional skin care – the focus of her company – is a result of combining all-natural botanical ingredients and soothing extracts with the maximum percentage of functional ingredients allowed in cosmetics. In the SkinAgain line, the lotions and cleanser are vegan, gluten-free, paraben and sulphate-free, and cruelty-free. They are blended with the power of positive intention, enhancing their healing effect. The lotions are: Youth (anti-wrinkle and brightening), Clear (blemish control), Vanish (scar and cellutite), Relief (sensitive and anti-redness), and Rescue (sunburn, bumps). Our team tried the Rescue, which rehabilitated the skin after severe burns, and Clear, to freshen the skin- and we’re believers! Learn more at: skinagain.com

Spa Treament Review of Dermalogica BioActive Peel

In any season, sometimes what our skin needs most is a bit of a refresher. Dermalogica’s BioActive Peel is a botanically based version of a chemical peel to revitalize the skin. The benefits include clearing inflammation (including from acne), reducing the appearance of fine lines, fading hyper pigmentation – generally smoothing the skin by literally peeling away roughness and old skin – and making skin camera (and everyday) ready.

My therapist’s calming hands and gentle touch alone were therapeutic when she gently applied the four-step system.  She checked in with me carefully while the enzymes were active on my skin – the tingling indicated that they were having the desired effect.  The peel’ active ingredients include pumpkin, papaya, lactic acid, trichloracetic acid, and salicylic acid; this is stronger than the average facial.  I particularly enjoyed the soothing provided by the final step: calming botanicals including cucumber and green tea leaf extract.  She carefully explained the aftercare regimen and send me home with instructions and products.  I did experience some expected peeling (addressed by the Dermalogica products) and I noticed freshness and a new shine to my skin.

BioPeel is available with a trained therapist at select spas, salons, and Dermalogica concept stores, including the flagship on Montana Avenue.  A series of three to six treatments is recommended; I observed a difference after my first one.  dermalogica.com – Felicia Tomasko
